P-Noy: "Divorce bill not a priority now nor anytime soon"
(SPOT.ph) After discussing the proposed divorce bill in the House of Representatives on Wednesday, June 1, President Noynoy Aquino put his foot down saying, "The divorce bill is not a priority at this point, (nor) will it be a priority anytime soon," reports Manila Bulletin.
"Our priorities are jobs generation, education, health and judicial reforms," the President said, who is currently on his Brunei state visit. Aquino is also more concerned about tackling the Reproductive Health (RH) Bill, which Malacañang Palace labels as the "Responsible Parenthood Bill." In the report, Aquino said that unlike the divorce bill, the RH bill promotes a better standard of living.
Aquino also wants to avoid another issue with the Church, which was contentious during the RH Bill debate. However, though he believes in the sanctity of marriage, the President also admitted that some relationships are beyond repair. "But they have to go through a very exhaustive process that will ensure that they will be given all the breaks, stop to rethink whether or not they want to dissolve their family."
In a report from The Philippine Star, Aquino said that he doesn’t want to make divorce "so easy that it will be like divorce in Las Vegas wherein you are married in the morning and then divorced in the afternoon. Family is very important."
