(SPOT.ph) Instead of pushing for divorce, Fr. Jerry Oblepias, director of the Family Life Ministry of the San Pablo Diocese, said yesterday, June 2, that the Philippines should just bask in its global renown as "uniquely against divorce," reports the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
"Even if we are the only country in the world that has not legalized divorce, it does not mean that we have to join the bandwagon that supports it," he said. The issue of divorce was brought up on June 1 by Gabriela party-list Rep. Luzviminda Ilagan, according to previous reports.
Oblepias pointed out that the Philippines is also the only Christian country in the Far East. "It is good to stand out uniquely when it comes to morality," he said. Regarding the Social Weather Stations’ survey which showed that 50 percent of Filipinos favored divorce, Fr. Melvin Castro, Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines-Ecumenical Commission on Family and Life executive secretary, said, "You [should not] put into account a very moral issue such as divorce. I think whatever the survey might say, we do not put too much importance to it."
