New DOTC Secretary Mar Roxas to face agency’s old issues
(SPOT.ph) According to a political analyst from the University of the Philippines, newly appointed Department of Transportation and Communications secretary Mar Roxas will be inheriting a list of problems long experienced by the department, reports ABS-CBN News. Roxas, who was initially pegged to be the next Chief of Staff, accepted the position yesterday, June 7.
According to another ABS-CBN report, some of the department’s unsolved issues include: tensions between Stradcom and the Land Transportation Office, the unsolved NBN-ZTE scandal from 2008, the unpaid Radio Frequency Identification cards for motorists, the dismal international status of airports and piers, rising oil and public transportation prices, among others.
Political analyst Dr. Clarita Santos from the University of the Philippines said, "We are looking for something new... For as long as forever, we have been looking for a way of connection our islands through a massive railway system." She added that if Roxas can pull that off, it would be "spectacular."
Roxas, who was President Noynoy Aquino’s running mate in the 2010 elections, had just gotten out of the year-long ban preventing him from taking any political post last May 11. In addition to his DOTC duties, he will also assume the post of senior member of the Cabinet’s economic cluster.
