Japanese scientists develop safe-to-eat "poop burger"
(SPOT.ph) Japanese scientists have found a way to make edible meat using proteins from human excrement, reports Digitaltrends.com. The meat, which is dyed red to resemble beef, is 63 percent protein, 25 percent carbohydrates, three percent lipids and nine percent minerals. Soy protein enhances the flavor and people have said it even tastes like beef.
A researcher from Okayama Laboratory, Mitsuyuki Ikeda, said that Tokyo Sewage asked him to explore the possible uses of sewage and he discovered that it contained a large amount of protein from the bacteria. The proteins were then extracted, combined with a reaction enhancer, and contained in an exploder which created the artificial meant, according to Digitaltrends.com. The harmful bacteria are killed with heat during the manufacturing process.
Scientists are aiming for the recycled meat to be priced as much as actual meat. Currently, however, with costs of research and production, it is worth about 10 to 20 times more than actual meat. The artificial meat also reduces production wastes and greenhouse gas emissions from the methane released by animals, as well as alleviating flak about meat-eating such as cruelty to animals, stated Digitaltrends.com. The poop meat also has less calories compared to real meat.
However, Ikeda knows that there is a psychological barrier from eating food made from human excrement. Kansas State University food safety professor Douglas Powell, who was not involved in the experiment, said, "Theoretically, there's nothing wrong with this... It could be quite safe to eat, but I'm sure there's a yuck factor there," according to LiveScience.com.
Powell also advised that it's still best to cook the meat since there is potential for cross-contamination in the laboratory where the poop meat is made.
