Azkals beat Sri Lanka 4-0; Kuwait is next opponent
(SPOT.ph) The Azkals became the first Philippine team to make it to the second round of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers after beating the Sri Lanka Brave Reds at the Rizal Memorial Stadium yesterday, 4-0, reports ABS-CBN News. The first leg of the Sri Lanka-Philippine qualifier last June 29 in Colombo resulted in a 1-1 draw.
Azkal winger Chieffy Caligdong struck the first goal after the 18th minute and soon, more goals followed from Angel Guirado and striker Phil Younghusband. Stephan Schrock and skipper Aly Borromeo, however, received two yellow cards each from the first two legs of the qualifier, and will be barred from the next match.
Azkals coach Michael Weiss said he will wait for confirmation whether Borromeo can play in the next game despite the yellow cards, reports GMA News. With the captain or not, Weiss said, "We are Azkals. We are used to difficult situations." According to Sri Lanka's coach, Jang Jung, his team lost to a better and younger team. "The Philippine players are much, much younger... We can see that clearly," he said.
Several personalities attended the match, including Angel Locsin, who watched her first live Azkals game. Other personalities present were ABS-CBN chair Eugenio Lopez III, actor-model Hans Montenegro, model-host Bubbles Paraiso, Manila Mayor Fred Lim, and Senators Migz Zubiri and TG Guingona.
The Azkals' next match will be on July 23 in Kuwait.
