Davao Mayor Sara Duterte’s disbarment sought by lawyer’s ethics crusader
(SPOT.ph) Lawyer Fernando Perito has filed a petition in the Supreme Court to disbar Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte for slugging a trial court sheriff when he refused to grant Duterte’s request to delay the demolition of shanties in Davao's Agdao district on July 1, reports ABS-CBN, citing an unnamed source.
According to ABS-CBN News, Perito is a crusader for lawyer's ethics and a lifetime member of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines. Perito has filed similar cases in the past, including one against former Presidential Commission on Good Governance chair Camilo Sabio for allegedly influencing the decision of his younger brother, former Court of Appeals Justice Jose Sabio Jr., in the case of Manila Electric Co. against the Government Service Insurance System in 2008. Perito also pushed for the expulsion of Ilocos Sur Rep. Ronaldo Singson after the latter pleaded guilty to drug trafficking early this year.
ABS-CBN interviewed Supreme Court spokesperson and Court Administrator Jose Midas Marquez about the petition. Marquez said, "I don't have any information on that, but we have to remember that disbarment against lawyers are confidential in nature."
Abe Andres, the trial court sheriff at the receiving end of Duterte's punches, however stated earlier that he does not plan to file any case against the mayor. He has also apologized for refusing to grant her request to delay the Agdao demolitions. Meanwhile, Duterte stands by her actions. She said in previous reports that she doesn't care if she gets disbarred since she has not practiced law in years.
