Miriam Defensor-Santiago’s blood pressure rises while defending bishops before Senate
(SPOT.ph) After giving a passionate speech in defense of the bishops implicated in the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office fund scandal, Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago's blood pressure surged to 160/100, reports ABS-CBN News. Someone from the senator's staff revealed that she became hypertensive after her speech during the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee's hearing yesterday, July 13.
Discussing the SUVs given to seven bishops during former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's term, Santiago justified that the "donated" vehicles were used for social work. In a GMA News report, Santiago was quoted saying, "I humbly submit that the Commission on Audit (COA) report was wrong and that there was no Constitutional violation." She clarified that COA's role is to audit and not to discuss Constitutional violations.
She also faulted the PCSO management and not the prelates for the scandal. "The recipients should not be liable," she said.
As chair of the Senate committee on Constitutional amendments, and revision of codes and laws, Santiago said she plans to conduct hearings in August about writing new charters for the PCSO and Pagcor, the government’s gaming corporation.
