Fil-Am Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra back in PH
(SPOT.ph) Fil-Am Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra is back in the Philippines for NBA FIT Philippines 2011, a health and wellness program organized by the basketball league and endorsed by the Department of Health, reports ABS-CBN News.
The last time Spoelstra was here was in 2010-a trip he described as "transformational." "I grew up with two cultures, with an American background and a Filipino side that was stressed from my mother," Spoelstra said. His mother hails from San Pablo, Laguna. The renowned coach added that the Philippines, where he has several relatives, combines his two passions in life: basketball and family. "When you are involved in the NBA, the lights, the expectations, everything that comes along with that, you also understand what really matters and that’s family," he said.
Spoelstra, who led Miami Heat to the NBA finals this year, said participating in the FIT program was fulfilling, reports GMA News. "Healthy living and physical activity are so important and NBA FIT is a chance for me to give back to the local community where basketball is such a passion amongst the people," he said.
The Philippine leg of the NBA FIT program began on July 25 and will culminate on August 6 at the SM Mall of Asia.
