PH Dragon Boat Team rakes in 5 golds at world championships

( After winning the 1000-meter small-boat event last Friday, the Philippine Dragon Boat team again bagged top spots in four more categories: the 200-meter men’s event, the 500-meter men’s event, the 200-meter mixed event, and the 500-meter mixed event, reports ABS-CBN News. The team competed in the International Dragon Boat World Championships in Tampa, Florida, last week.

They also added a silver medal in their roster after coming in second to Russia in the All Comers 200-meter Small Boat event, reports ABS-CBN News. The team expressed their excitement over their Facebook page: "What more can (we) say? The medals, the results, the people's love and support. The athletes, the coaches, the fellow dragon boaters, the sponsors. Mula noon hanggang ngayon, nagtatala tayo ng kasaysayan (Since then and until now, we’ve been making history). Let’s celebrate the fact that one of the unpopular sports in the country is finally put into the spotlight!"

Prior to the competition, deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte encouraged Pinoys to give the team, which includes several members from the Armed Forces of the Philippines, the same level of support they showed the Philippine Azkals. According to a separate GMA News report, the country’s most popular team sports, basketball and football, have not achieved the same level of success as the dragon boat team. The team is scheduled to arrive in Manila Friday this week.
