Australian triathlete Pete Jacobs wins CamSur Ironman for the 2nd time
(SPOT.ph) Defending champion Pete Jacobs bagged his second consecutive Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 title yesterday, August 14, at the Camarines Sur Watersports Complex (CWC), reports GMA News. According to Manila Bulletin, the Australian native, who finished with 3:51:43, beat 1,117 athletes from 28 countries in the swimming, biking, and running legs of the race.
Jacobs had a far 20-minute advantage over second placer Jesse Thomas from the United States. The Australian champ, whose Philippine visit doubled as his honeymoon, credited his win to his wife. "I got married recently and I was much more relaxed going into the race. My wife and I had a few days out in the Caramoan beach. So that helped me get into a better frame of mind going into the race," he told Ironman.com. Jacobs even stopped to kiss his wife when he saw her during one of the transitions, reports The Philippine Star.
In the female divison, fellow Australian Belinda Granger placed first with 4:26:03. Meanwhile, Filipino triathlete Arland Macasieb, who finished eighth, was the top entry among the local contenders. Celebrities also joined in the challenge: spotted during the race were actor Richard Gutierrez, socialite Tessa Prieto Valdes, Alaska Milk CEO Wilfred Steven Uytengsu, businessman Anthony Pangilinan, and Sen. Pia Cayetano. The top 30 contenders earned a spot in the World Championships in Hawaii.
