PH Volcanoes plan to dominate Asia, eye 2015 World Cup
(SPOT.ph) Their athletic skills may have been overshadowed by their infamous EDSA billboards but the national rugby team, dubbed the Philippine Volcanoes, is set to make the country a dominant force in the sport, reports GMA News. The team will fly to China on Friday, August 26, for the Shanghai Sevens tournament on August 27.
According to the report, the national rugby team wants to prove that they are at par with strong Asian teams like Kuwait or the current champion, Korea, before they set their sights on the 2015 Rugby World Cup. "Siguro, we’re in the top 7 (in Asia)," said Volcanoes member Andrew Wolff. "So within two years baka makasama kami sa top 5. And who knows, in the next World Cup in 2015, makasama tayo."
Newly appointed Volcanoes captain Jake Letts said the team’s effort is worth "close to five or six years" of hard work. They’ve also developed a strong bond with each other. "When we come together... we’re brothers," he said, adding that he’s also grateful for the country’s support. "We’ve been loved by the Philippines. Every time we play for the Philippines it’s a joy... We’re just so proud to be in the national team."
