Tito Sotto suspects some RH Bill backers are pro-abortion
(SPOT.ph) During the second day of the Senate debates on the Reproductive Health Bill, Sen. Tito Sotto targeted supporters of the controversial legislation, reports GMA News. Sotto, a known detractor of the bill, said his main concern is that the Family Planning Organization of the Philippines, a group supporting the bill, is a member of the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF). Sotto said the IPPF’s leader, Margaret Sanger, pioneered a "scientific strategy of eliminating the poor, the weak, the useless, and the uneducated."
In an ABS-CBN report, the bill’s co-sponsor Sen. Pia Cayetano clarified that the IPPF supports any type of family planning depending on the laws of each country. Since abortion is illegal in the Philippines, the group does not support it. However, Cayetano gave in to Sotto’s request for a complete list of the bill’s backers. "'Di naman ho natin tinatago 'yon (We’re not hiding the bill’s supporters). Many times their presence are acknowledged in the Senate," she said in a GMA report.
Meanwhile, Sen. Bong Bong Marcos added the bill would help improve health services in local government units. A national law, he said, would assist local governments in providing reproductive health services to the people.
