PH dragon boat team not going to SEA Games
(SPOT.ph) Despite their commendable performance in the International Dragon Boat World Championships earlier this month, the Philippine Dragon Boat Federation will not represent the country in the upcoming Southeast Asian Games this November, reports Manila Bulletin. The Philippine Canoe Kayak Federation is slated to compete instead.
According to Manila Bulletin, the reason for the decision was the failure to reconcile the differences among the PDBF, sports commissions, and the PCKF. Recent reports showed that sports commissions will not recognize the dragon boat members as a national athletes unless they join the canoe-kayak group. Some sports officials, meanwhile, have blamed PDBF president Marcia Cristobal, who failed to attend a meeting about the SEA Games. Cristobal reasoned that the last-minute meeting clashed with a previous commitment.
PDBF mentor Nestor Illagan, however, supports the kayak team. "Pinaghirapan din ng mga atleta nila ang pagti-training para lang makasama sa lineup at maka-compete sa SEAG (Their athletes also worked hard and trained so they can compete in the SEAG)," he said, adding that some kayak members also trained under the PDBF.
