Rep. Mitos Magsaysay calls Communications chief Ricky Carandang "arrogant" and a "spoiled brat" during budget hearing
(SPOT.ph) Rep. Mitos Magsaysay called Communications Secretary "arrogant," "immature," and a "spoiled brat" during the House committee hearing on the proposed budget of the Presidential Communications Development and Strategic Planning Office yesterday, reports ABS-CBN News. Magsaysay’s interpellation, which was supposed to be only 10 minutes, lasted about half an hour and was interrupted twice by fellow representatives who tried to calm her down.
After questioning the agency’s purchase of costlier Blackberry phones and Apple MacBook Pro laptops, tensions flared when Magsaysay veered the subject to Carandang’s role in President Noynoy Aquino’s declining ratings. "Don't you think you have failed in your mandate in communicating the good policies of President Aquino?" asked Magsaysay, saying that even both the President and his sister blamed the problems on messaging. Carandang responded with "Was that a rhetorical question or did you actually want me to answer that?" which Magsaysay did not take well.
"Don't be arrogant. I'm warning you... If you're going to be arrogant, don't be in public service," she said in a GMA report, adding, "You have a long way to go as far as maturity and wisdom is concerned... Kami pag upo namin dito hiniram lang namin ito wala kaming karapatan maging arogante. "Ikaw, appointed official ka lang, ano karapatan mong maging arogante? ’Yung pagiging arogante mo at pagiging spoiled brat mo, iiwan mo iyan sa bahay mo. Once pumasok ka sa Office of the President, matuto kang maging humble."
After 28 minutes, Magsaysay continued to question Carandang, this time about an official government statement that, according to ABS-CBN, described her as a liar who sided with the most corrupt president of the country. After admitting that he wrote the statement, Carandang apologized to Magsaysay. "I regret that the exchange both in media and here has led to atmosphere of animosity. I merely was trying to defend my office against the false allegations," adding that he was sorry for hurting the representative’s feelings.
Magsaysay remained skeptical. "You know you don't have to be so showbiz about it. I don't know if the apology was sincere or not." In an attempt to diffuse the tension, however, Rep. Rodolfo Fariñas said, "If that were not sincere I'd nominate him for (a) FAMAS."
