P-Noy on his RH Bill strategy: "Should I attempt to mimic an ostrich that buries its head in the sand?"

Interaksyon.com reports that President Noynoy Aquino, in an open forum with members of the Asia Society in New York, said there will be no backing down on the passage of a responsible parenthood law despite strong opposition from the Catholic Church.

Aquino said, "We have our own personal religious beliefs, but we have to separate those actions of the state and those actions of the church. That has gotten me into conflict with certain conservative members of the clergy. But at the end of the day... Should I attempt to mimic an ostrich that buries [its] head in the sand, when I’ll be asked by God at some point in time, what did you do to the least of my brethren? I will be able to say that we stopped the condition where nobody seemed to care enough to educate them and empower them to effect their own decisions."

Aquino has included the bill-now be called the Responsible Parenthood, Reproductive Health and Population and Development Bill-among his administration’s priority measures.

In any case, several amendments to the original Reproductive Health bill were also included in the Palace version to reflect concerns of Catholic bishops. Among the amendments proposed by the Palace are the following: the removal of a provision requiring all hospitals to carry a full-range of modern artificial family planning methods; funding for natural family planning methods; and moving the age-appropriate sex education to start from Grade 5.
