GMA News Online reports that Father Fausto Tentorio, the Italian priest who was gunned down in North Cotabato yesterday, October 16, was the third priest from the Pontificio Instituto Missioni Estere (PIME or Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions) who was murdered in the Philippines.

PIME, which was founded in Italy in 1850, is a congregation whose priests dedicate their lives to missionary work among non-Christians. PIME’s priests have been serving remote communities in the Philippines since 1968.

Tentorio, 59, was a staunch anti-mining advocate who had previously received death threats. A lone gunman shot him dead inside the compound of the Mother of Perpetual Help parish church in the town of Arakan.

GMA News Online revealed that two other PIME priests were murdered before Tentorio-Father Tullio Favali (who was killed on April 11, 1985) and Father Salvatore Carzedda (who was killed on May 20, 1992).

According to the report, the police are still determining the identity of the killer and the motive for Tentorio’s murder.
