There’s nothing like bad press to get some attention-and the headache that is the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1 is certainly getting a lot of it after being tagged as the world’s worst airport by the website Sleeping in Airports.

There’s nothing like bad press to get some attention-and the headache that is the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1 is certainly getting a lot of it after being tagged as the world’s worst airport by the website Sleeping in Airports.

ABS-CBNNews.com-quoting Department of Transprtaion and Communications (DOTC) Secretary Mar Roxas’ statements in a dzMM interview-reports that the government is planning a P500-million facelift of the 30-year-old NAIA 1.

Roxas said the program will cover the rehabilitation of the arrival and departure areas of NAIA 1 and the modernization of its check-in counters, among others. "The DOTC has been studying this P500-million (rehabilitation) program for over a year or so. I haven’t committed to it yet because we’re still looking for funding. We already have P100 million, but we still have to source the rest," he said.

Roxas clarified that the rehab will only be a akin to a "make-up" or "botox" job, as the beleaguered NAIA 1, which he says takes on seven million passengers a year, already has so much wear and tear. Ideally, after the so-called "botox" job, Roxas said that the government may sell NAIA 1 for $2.5 billion. The proceeds will then be used to create a bigger airport in Clark, Pampanga.
