ABS-CBNNews.com reports that President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III approved an additional P6.3 billion budget for the major rehabilitation of the Light Rail Transit Lines 1 and 2 and Metro Rail Transit 3 this year.

Department of Budget and Management (DBM) Secretary Florencio B. Abad on Monday said P4.5 billion has been allocated for the acquisition of 26 additional coaches for the MRT. Another P1.87 billion for the LRT 1 and 2 rehabilitation.

Abad emphasized this is the first time the government is subsidizing the rehabilitation of the 30-year old LRT-1, the 10-year old  LRT-2 and the 12-year old MRT-3. Past maintaenance of LRT and MRT has been charged against its revenues.

According to the report, 26 additional coaches will also be acquired for the "always overcrowded" MRT 3, which runs from Magallanes in Pasay to North Avenue in Quezon City. This is "aimed at increasing the MRT’s designed peak loading capacity by as much as 60 percent-from 23,640 per peak hour per direction (PPHPD) to 37,824 PPHPD. The report also revealed that right now, "the MRT’s loading limit is often breached, which causes service disruption and mechanical breakdowns."

The report did not specify the exact date when the major overhaul for the LRT and MRT will commence.
