P-Noy declares "state of national calamity" in the wake of Sendong

Interaksyon.com reports that President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III has "declared a state of national calamity and approved a P28-million cash-for-work program for those displaced by the deadly floods brought by tropical storm Sendong." Aquino made the announcement during his visit to the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan on Tuesday, December 20.

Aquino made the announcement during his visit to the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan on Tuesday, December 20.

The report quoted presidential spokesman Atty. Edwin Lacierda, who explained that "under a state of national calamity, price controls will be automatically enforced in affected areas while victims can avail of interest-free loans." According to Malacañang, the price controls will be in place for 60 days unless lifted earlier.

The report further revealed that Aquino ordered the release of P90 million for bridge repair, P54 million for water system rehabilitation, as well as P150 million for automatic river water level sensors charged against P1.2 billion calamity funds. Aquino also disclosed that "the United States will assist in airlifting relief goods to calamity-stricken areas."
