GMA News Online, citing a 24 Oras report, reveals that the Department of Health (DOH) tally of "New Year victims" has gone up to 739. The tally includes children who were injured by New Year-related accidents. The number of casualties may go higher as the DOH receives more reports.

The report noted: "According to the DOH, most injuries and deaths were caused by relighting or retrieving firecrackers that fizzled out." The report cited the case of John Vincent Gonzales, a nine-year old boy who died on New Year’s Day after he supposedly "gathered and played with gunpowder from unexploded firecrackers."

In light of this, ABS-CBNNews.com reports that the DOH and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources are pushing for a "total firecracker ban." The Philippine National Police is likewise thinking of suspending permits to carry firearms during the season due to the fact that many people were hit by stray bullets.
