ABS-CBNNews.com reports that the family of new World Boxing Organization (WBO) super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire, Jr. "is disappointed with the boxer despite the success he has achieved in the sport." Donaire’s tense relationship with his family has been publicized in the past.
Â
The report noted: "In General Santos City, Donaire's grandparents watched his bout against Wilfredo Vazquez Jr., but they did not celebrate when he was named the winner via split decision." Donaire fought Vasquez on February 4 (U.S. time) in San Antonio, Texas.
Â
The report quoted Donaire’s grandmother, Teresita Dente, who said, "Sana natalo na lang s’ya. Kung natalo s’ya ako lang yata ang magtatatalon sa tuwa dito (I had hoped he would lose. If he had lost, I’d be the only person jumping for joy here)."
Â
According to the report, Dente claimed that Donaire had no respect for his father, Nonito Sr. Meanwhile, the boxer’s grandfather Epifanio Donaire, said, "Hindi talaga ako makalimot sa pag-limot n’ya sa amin (I can’t forget how he forgot about us)."
