Manila Bulletin Online reports that Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Tagle is slamming couples who insist on incorporating what he refers to as "gimmicks" in their church wedding. He noted that "some couples tend to focus more on making the wedding ceremony more dramatic, instead of focusing on the significance of the Sacrament of Matrimony and its significance to their faith."

As examples, he cited one wedding where "the ceremony was delayed for 45 minutes because the butterflies that would be released while the bride walked toward the altar were not delivered on time." He also recalled that a bride-to-be once wrote him and asked if her dog would be allowed to serve as ring bearer." He asked, "What has become of weddings nowadays? What is the significance of the dog to faith?"

Tagle lamented, "The sacraments have become an event for social gatherings, and it just becomes a cultural tradition. The last thing they think about is their faith."
