Miss Universe 1969 winner Gloria Diaz is OK with decision to include transgenders in pageant

ABS-CBNNews.com reports that in an interview during the press conference for Regal Films’ Mommy Returns on Monday night (April 16), Miss Universe 1969 Gloria Diaz said "Well if the pageant says they are welcome, they are welcome but the thing is are they really going to allow them to win and will the country want gay people to represent them. But if the country wants [it], so do I."

Diaz was talking about 23-year-old transgender contestant from Canada, Jenna Talackova, who, after being initially disqualified, was evetually allowed by Miss Universe organizers to join the this year’s pageant. Talackova had undergone a sex change operation when she was 19.

 

In any case, according to the report, Diaz also revealed that she’s "thankful that she didn’t have to face such issues when she joined the pageant decades ago."
