Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim personally smashes seized "videokarera" machines with mallet, says they "distract youth from studies"

Inquirer.net reports that Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim, using a mallet, literally smashed 15 "videokarera" (virtual horse racing) machines that were seized by authorities in Tondo, Pandacan, Sampaloc and Binondo last month. The report quoted Lim as saying that a videokarera machine "distracts the youth from their studies." "The confiscation of the machines is an important accomplishment in our campaign against criminality," he added.

Chief Inspector Mar Reyes, head of the Manila City Hall Public Assistance, reportedly said the machines had to be destroyed because these could still be recycled should these be left intact. He said appropriate charges have been filed against the operators and owners of the confiscated units.
