Jerry E. Esplanada of The Philippine Daily Inquirer, citing the Xinhua News Agency, reports that in a Monday (June 25) press briefing in Beijing that Hong Lei, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson, said that China "opposes any illegal activity that may infringe on China's sovereignty."

Hong Lei was referring to the fact that "China has warned the Philippines against operating a public kindergarten school on Pag-asa Island off Palawan province." According to the report, "the Kalayaan municipal government inaugurated a public kindergarten last week." Hong Lei "insisted that China had ’indisputable sovereignty’ over the Spratly chain of islands and its surrounding waters."

The report noted that Pag-asa Island "is part of Kalayaan town in Palawan and is home to about 200 Filipinos." The report likewise pointed out that "the island has been under the Philippine government’s control since the 1970s."
