KFC’s Cheese Top Burger slammed by Gawker.com writer

Neetzan Zimmerman of Gawker.com, in an article posted on June 27, wrote: "KFC has quite literally topped itself in the dumb sandwich department with the introduction of its latest napkin industry tie-in, the Cheese Top Burger." In Zimmerman’s words, the sandwich was recently ""unleashed on an unsuspecting Filipino public."

(SPOT.ph) [UPDATE No. 2, 2:55 p.m., June 28] Neetzan Zimmerman of Gawker.com, in an article posted on June 27, wrote: "KFC has quite literally topped itself in the dumb sandwich department with the introduction of its latest napkin industry tie-in, the Cheese Top Burger."  In Zimmerman’s words, the sandwich was recently "unleashed on an unsuspecting Filipino public." (Note: Apparently, Zimmerman most probably doesn’t like messy burgers. Please keep in mind that Zimmerman’s tone is sarcastic and the statement doesn’t mean that the so-called "tie-in" is real.)

SPOT.ph staff immediately logged on to KFC Philippines’ website and saw that, indeed, there was such a thing as the Cheese Top Burger, which is purportedly priced at ₱48. (The burger’s promo poster lists the price as ₱50.) Needless to say, the sight of the burger that was criticized on Gawker.com got us interested. We wanted to taste it and, perhaps, prove Zimmerman wrong.

So, we called KFC’s Metro Manila delivery hotline, 887-8888. To our dismay, the man who answered the phone said that he had never heard of such a thing. At one point, he even reiterated to the SPOT.ph staffer, "This is KFC." (He must have thought we were crazy for asking about the burger in the first place.)

Still, we urged the staffer to ask more questions about the Cheese Top Burger. Bottom line: According to the guy who answered the phone KFC (in Metro Manila, at least) has allegedly never offered such an item.

If so, then why is the photo of the Cheese Top Burger on the KFC Philippines website? Does this burger even exist? Has anyone ever tasted this burger or, at least, seen it up close? Please help us solve this culinary mystery.

After we posted the first installement of this feed at around 11:34 a.m. today, June 28, we found out that the burger does exist. Thanks to SPOT.ph readers who volunteered information and evidence.
