ABS-CBNNews.com reports that on Thursday, June 28, Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago joked about her decision to decline her nomination for the post of Supreme Court Chief Justice. The report quoted Santiago, who said, "I decline. Napaisip ako kung galit ba sa akin ang taong ito na nag-nominate dahil gusto lang yata niyang manahimik ako sa isang sulok at magkandaduling sa pagbabasa ng mga dokumento (I think the person who nominated me is mad at me and wants me to me stay in a corner quietly reading and going cross-eyed over documents)."

The report noted that Santiago will not be able to finish her term because she was appointed as a judge in the International Criminal Court. According to the report, "Santiago, however, clarified that her Senate post cannot be declared vacant yet by the Commission on Elections because she can’t assume her post at the ICC until the judge she is replacing wraps up all his cases."
