ABS-CBNNews.com reports that on Tuesday, July 10, the Manila Police District (MPD) "formally filed abortion charges against a pregnant woman who cut open her belly last week." The report quoted Senior Inspector Joselito De Ocampo of MPD's Homicide Section, who said that the woman "was charged with violation of Article 256 (Intentional Abortion) of the Revised Penal Code." The report also noted that the woman’s uncle and aunt "who had ordered garbage collectors to bury the baby’s remains may also face charges, such as obstruction of justice and conspiracy."
In an earlier ABS-CBNNews.com report, it was revealed that on July 3, "the staff of the Ospital ng Sampaloc in Manila was left dumbfounded when a woman with an incision on her stomach asked to be confined." The woman admitted that she had removed her baby herself. She had used a kitchen knife and then sewed up her wound with an ordinary needle and thread. The report added that the woman’s family members, her aunt and uncle, then also arrived at the hospital with the baby’s lifeless body. According to Dr. Mary Grace Mayuga, who had asked the woman why she performed the "operation"on herself, related, "Kasi daw, kailangan niyang tanggalin dahil maraming magagalit (She only said the baby had to be taken out because a lot of people would get mad)."
The woman and her relatives’ identitites have not been divulged. Doctors are conducting tests to determine if the woman is suffering from a mental illness. It’s still not clear what triggered the woman’s decision to cut herself open or what how exactly the baby died. A Philippine Daily Inquirer report (as cited by ASB-CBNNews.com) had noted that the woman was a "28-year-old midwifery graduate."
