InterAksyon.com reports that "award-winning director Joel Lamangan (The Flor Contemplacion Story, Bulaklak ng Maynila, and many more) is running for the congressional seat in the first district of Cavite." The report revealed that Lamangan has been tagged as "an adopted candidate of the opposition Cavite Coalition Group forged by the powerful Revilla and Remulla clans of Cavite."

According to the report, Lamangan will be going up against Francis Gerald Abaya of the Liberal Party. The report explained: "The latter is a brother of the last congressman to represent the province's first district, Joseph Emilio Abaya, who was recently appointed Secretary of the Department of Transportation and Communication."

The report quoted director Gil Portes, Lamangan’s close friend, who told InterAksyon.com that Lamangan had kept his desire to run for Congress a secret because his friends "would have discouraged him from running." The report added that Lamangan was "a member of the Kabataang Makabayan in Cavite in his teens" and that he was "incarcerated twice during Martial Law, in 1973 and 1977, and suffered torture during the two years he spent in jail in Bicutan."
