610,156 firearms with expired licenses in PH, reveals PNP

Cecille Suerte Felipe of The Philippine Star reports that during a meda forum on Tuesday, October 16, the Philippine National Police (PNP) revealed that "the licenses of 610,156 firearms have already expired and the gun owners would face charges for illegal possession of firearms."

The report quoted Chief Inspector Nelson Bautista of the PNP Firearms and Explosives Office (FEO), who said they have sent letters to gun holders with expired licenses to renew their firearm license. He explained, "A day after the license of your firearm expired and you failed to renew it with FEO, you will be charged with illegal possession of firearms."

 

According the report, Bautista said there are now 1,592,435 registered firearms nationwide. The report noted that "Department of Interior and Local Government Secretary Manuel Roxas II has ordered the PNP to intensify the accounting of loose firearms to minimize violence during the May 2013 elections."
