Unopposed candidates still need votes to win, Comelec says

Candidates running unopposed in the 2013 elections are not sure bets yet, Commission on Elections chairman Sixto Brillantes Jr. said over the weekend.

Candidates running unopposed in the 2013 elections are not sure bets yet, Commission on Elections chairman Sixto Brillantes Jr. said over the weekend.

Mayen Jaymalin of the Philippine Star reports the Comelec will still have to count votes even in precincts with only one candidate.  "Even if the candidate is unopposed we still need to open one ballot box from one precinct before proclaiming the winner," Brillantes said. Candidates will need to get more than one vote to win, the report said.

Of 640 candidates vying for seats at the House of Representatives in the 2013 elections, 18 are running unopposed, the report said.
