Corruption in the private sector should be a crime too,  lawmakers from the Citizens’ Battle Against Corruption (CIBAC) party-list said Monday.

In a press statement, CIBAC party-list Representative Sherwin Tugna said it is commonly thought that corruption is prevalent only in government offices.  "However, it is forgotten that graft and corruption are not limited in the government sector," he said.

Representatives Tugna and Cinchona Cruz-Gonzales, also from CIBAC, have filed a bill to amend the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act to make corruption in the private sector a crime. Under the bill, employees and agents who fake receipts and statements of accounts, or solicits gifts and advantages "in relation to his principal's affairs or business" will be punishable for corruption.

If the bill is passed into law, corruption in the private sector "shall be punished with imprisonment of six years and one month to 15 years, pay a fine of five hundred pesos to one million pesos."

"In doing this, a clear message is being sent out that graft and corruption is prohibited in any sector of society. All Filipinos are part of the fight against graft and corruption," Tugna said.
