Navy could close deal for Italian warships by year-end

The Philippines may close a deal to buy two missile warships before the year ends, Alexis Romero of the Philippine Star reports.

The Philippine Star report quotes Defense Undersecretary Fernando Manalo as saying negotiation for two Maestrale-class ships is "in its advanced stage".  With negotiations being held government-to-government, "even with [a] little delay in implementation, we can still hit that before the end of 2012," the report said.

The two ships have "anti-aircraft, anti-ship and anti-submarine capabilities, and missile systems and modern radars," the report said. The purchase of the two missile-firing warships is expected to cost the government P11.7 billion.
