MRT fares to stay low until quality of service goes up

Commuters on the Metro Rail Transit can breathe easy, at least figuratively. The Department of Transportation and Communications will hold off on raising fares until it can assure better service on the trains.

 

Virgil Lopez of Sunstar.com.ph reports Transportation Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya told senators at a budget hearing that the plan to double train fares will not push through yet. "What assurance that the DOTC can give is that there will be no fare hike until we get doable things to improve the services done," he reportedly said.

 

Among the improvements that the DOTC is eyeing are repairs of escalators and elevators and the purchase of 52 more train cars, which the National Economic and Development Authority has already authorized.
