The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority is turning to Radio-frequency Identification stickers to detect and catch jeepneys buses operating without a franchise or outside their authorized routes.

Clara Masinag of InterAksyon.com reports the RFIDs will transmit data over a wireless network to the MMDA command center in real time. "If a PUV has a registered route on Fairview, but the vehicle is monitored through the e-tag to be cruising elsewhere, the reader will transmit that in real time to the authorities, and the erring PUV can be apprehended," MMDA director Mila Silvestre explains in the report.

Tagging public utility vehicles with the RFID stickers, which cost around P480 each, will be fully implemented in April 2013.
