Malacañang suspends pro-Binay Cebu governor for ’grave abuse of power’

Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa has ordered Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia suspended for six months for allegedly blocking funds meant for the office of then vice governor Gregorio Sanchez Jr.

Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa has ordered Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia suspended for six months for allegedly blocking funds meant for the office of then vice governor Gregorio Sanchez Jr.

Jill Beltran of Sun.Star Online quotes Local Government Secretary Manuel Roxas II as saying the suspension order will be served Wednesday by local police and the regional office of the Department of Interior and Local Government.

"Roxas said the penalty of suspension against the Cebu governor was in relation to the alleged usurpation of authority, which was investigated by the late [DILG ]Secretary Jesse Robredo," the report said.  Sanchez died from cancer last year.

Garcia, a member of the United Nationalist Alliance led by Vice President Jejomar Binay, dismissed the suspension as "dirty tactics" in preparation for the 2013 elections.
