Weather bureau raises storm warning signals over areas in Visayas and Mindanao

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration has raised Public Storm Signal No. 1 over nine provinces in the Visayas and Mindanao in anticipation of a tropical depression that could develop into a storm.

The Philippine News Agency, through Sun.Star Online, reports Signal No. 1 has been raised over the provinces of Leyte, Southern Leyte, Eastern and Western Samar in the Visayas, and over  Surigao Del Norte, Dinagat Island, Surigao Del Sur, Agusan provinces and Camiguin Island in Midnanao.

 

According to the report, "Quinta", "the 17th tropical cyclone to enter the country this year, was located 400 kilometers east of Surigao City with maximum winds of 55 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center." It is expected to make landfall over Dinagat Island on Wednesday morning.

 

The report quotes weather forecaster Alan Pura as saying Quinta has a "slim chance" of intensifying into a storm.
