Preparations for the elections will create new jobs, the Labor department says

The Department of Labor and Employment says the election year will give jobless Filipinos a better chance of finding work as politicians gear up for the polls in May.

The Department of Labor and Employment says the election year will give jobless Filipinos a better chance of finding work as politicians gear up for the polls in May.

Sun.Star Online reports Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said unemployment, which stands at 6.8 percent, is unlikely to rise early in the year. "She said such expectations stem from the usual practice of local politicians hiring more personnel during the campaign period and on Election Day itself," the report said.

The Department of Budget and Management has also said election spending will be one of the biggest contributors to economic growth in 2013.

DOLE has meanwhile set aside more money from its budget for 2013 for skills training for jobseekers. Baldoz said she has met with the country’s labor attaches to identify employment prospects for Filipinos abroad.
