The Senate may hold hearings to see how the government can further regulate the manufacture, sale, and use of  firecrackers and pyrotechnics, Jelly Musico of the Philippine News Agency reports on InterAksyon.com.

"I'm really planning to conduct a hearing. What our committee will do is to review the ordinances, including (those passed by) the local governments, or even banning fireworks and then consolidate (the ordinances)", reelctionist Senator Gregorio Honasan II, chairman of the Senate committee on public order said.

Senator Panfilo Lacson, a former national police chief, agreed with the need for tighter regulation so less people will be injured by firecrackers during the holiday revelry. "Legislation as a tool can help in this regard because in Bocaue, Bulacan, you will surely find the most powerful and destructive firecrackers that could easily qualify as explosives," he said. Senators Manuel Villar Jr. and Miriam Defensor Santiago have already filed bills to regulate firecrackers.

According to the Department of Health, which has been monitoring firecracker-related injuries and has been telling people to refrain from using firecrackers, injuries from firecrackers tallied so far have reached 697 down from 984 last year.
