Bandila reports that on at around 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 3, a 28-year-old woman (identified in other reports as Rica Fernandez) tried to kill herself by hurling herself in front of a train at the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) station in Shaw Boulevard. The MRT train driver was able to hit the brakes, but the woman still got hit. She was rushed to the Victor R. Potenciano Medical Center. She survived but the report said her left leg had to be amputated because it got crushed by the train. MRT General Manager Atty. Val Vitangcol said that the MRT driver did the best he could under the circumstances and that he is not to blame for the incident. MRT operations were stalled for an hour due to Fernandez’s suicide attempt.
