Nothing wrong with President Aquino endorsing candidates while touring the provinces, Comelec says

There’s nothing wrong with President Benigno Aquino III endorsing the administration’s senatorial candidates while touring the country’s provinces, Commission on Elections chairman Sixto Brillantes Jr. says, adding there is no such thing as premature campaigning anymore.

Sheila Crisostomo of the Philippine Star quotes Brillantes as saying, "There's no premature campaigning. That's OK. UNA (United Nationalist Alliance) is also doing that. You can see their faces coming out on TV one by one. What can we do about that?" He said the Supreme Court has already ruled on the issue of premature campaigning and until the campaign period starts, there is nothing the Comelec can do.

The Comelec, though, is considering monitoring social media once the campaign period does start. He said the Comelec would look into whether some netizens are being used for propaganda. "It's exactly the same analogy in posters. They (candidates) would say they had nothing to do with it. So what do you do? It's just a matter of investigation," he said.

The Comelec will also be stricter with counting airtime for candidates when the campaign period starts.
