Tax evasion charges against actress Judy Ann Santos have been dimissed by the Court of Tax Appeals for lack of evidence, but she still has to pay P3.4 million in back taxes.

Jun Ramirez of the Manila Bulletin reports the CTA ruled that prosecutors were not able to suffiiciently prove that Santos intended to cheat on her taxes.

The charges were filed in 2005 by then Bureau of Internal Revenue commissioner Guillermo Parayno after Santos allegedly failed to declare all her earnings in 2002. The actress said her taxes had been computed with the help of a certified public accountant and that she paid her taxes "with professional guidance and assistance."

The BIR could still appeal the decision and Santos still has to pay millions in taxes.

"The former soap opera star sobbed silently and shed tears upon hearing the verdict read by the clerk of court of the CTA's Third Division presided by Justice Lovell Bautista. Santos told the Manila Bulletin ’thank God it is over,’ as she hurriedly left the courtroom with her husband, TV host Ryan Agoncillo," the report said.
