United Nationalist Alliance: Liberal Party began premature election campaign first

The United Nationalist Alliance on Thursday parried criticism that they have begun campaigning for the May elections even before the campaign season starts, saying the Liberal Party-led administration coalition did it first.

JC Bello Ruiz of the Manila Bulletin quotes Navotas Representative Tobias Tiangco , UNA secretary general, as saying administration bets have been campaigning early because they need more exposure.

"As a matter of fact, it is LP that needed a boost. That's why some of their presumed candidates were among the very first ones to have their ads aired on TV. They have been making provincial rounds as early as August last year - not us," he said.

According to the report, President Benigno Aquino III said at an event in Mandaue City that UNA candidates have had to campaign early because of poor showing on surveys.

"With all due respect to the President, we find it amusing that he would take issue with our supposed early campaigning during a political event organized by the LP and attended by some of the LP coalition candidates whom he asked the public to support," he also said.

Aquino was elected in 2010 on a campaign that promised reform, an alternative to the perceived corruption of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s administration. The UNA is now offering an alternative to the alternative that Aquino and the Liberal Party promised in 2010.
