740 Pinoys who fled Sabah seek refuge in Mangsee Island in Palawan

Elmer Badilla of InterAksyon.com reports that according to Commodore Joseph Rustom Peña, commander of Naval Forces West, "740Filipinos who fled from Sabah have sought shelter on Mangsee Island, off the southernmost Palawan town of Balabac."

Elmer Badilla of InterAksyon.com reports that according to Commodore Joseph Rustom Peña, commander of Naval Forces West, "740Filipinos who fled from Sabah have sought shelter on Mangsee Island, off the southernmost Palawan town of Balabac." They arrived at Mangsee Island on Tuesday, April 2.

 

The report noted: "The evacuees, who lacked proper documentation, had apparently fled to avoid a reported crackdown by Malaysian authorities in the wake of fighting last month between followers of Sulu Sultan Jamalul Kiram III, who had gone to Sabah to press their claim to the territory, and security forces there."

 

The report also pointed out that "Mangsee is a 23-hectare islet in the middle of the Sulu Sea, around 10 kilometers north of Sabah."
