Supreme Court junks petition to prevent tuition fee hikes

Edu Punay of Philstar.com reports that the Supreme Court (SC) junked on Wednesday a petition filed by youth groups against the tuition hikes implemented by more than 300 universities and colleges for the current academic year.

The report quoted SC spokesman Theodore Te as saying in a press conference that "the justices decided to dismiss outright the petition of Kabataan party-list and other groups both on technical and substantive grounds." He explained that the SC deemed there was "no actual case... and that the petition was premature" because "the groups immediately filed the petition without first appealing" the order from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) allowing the request for tuition hikes from 354 private colleges and universities nationwide.

The youth groups filed the petition asking the SC to issue a temporary restraining order against the CHED's order on May 29.
