Tricia Aquino of InterAksyon.com reports that the Philippines "is 2012’s biggest consumer of gin worldwide, according to The Economist, which cited data from the International Wine & Spirit Research." The report, which was based on The Economist's infographic on the research, noted that "Filipinos drank almost 200 million liters of gin (in 2012). This translates to almost 1.4 liters per person."
Â
Aside from being the world's top gin consumer, the Philippines also ranks as the world's "third biggest consumer of rum" with almost 200 million liters ingested by Filipinos in 2012. India placed first while the United States ranked second in the rum consumption category.
Â
According to The Economist, "The Filipinos’ taste for gin can be attributed in part to good marketing and to the spirit’s long-established toe-hold in the local market. Ginebra San Miguel, a firm that makes the world’s two bestselling brands, started operations there in 1834."
