Ramon Magsaysay Award given to Afghanistan’s first and only female provincial governor
She did not let the war get in the way of fighting for women’s rights
Agence France-Presse (via InterAksyon.com) reports that Afghanistan’s first and only female provincial governor has been named as one of the Ramon Magsaysay awardees for 2013.
According to the report, the Manila-based Ramon Magsaysay Foundation cited Governor Habiba Sarabi of Bamyan, Afghanistan for "promoting education and women’s rights despite working in an impoverished and war-torn environment." She and Myanmar aid worker Lahpai Seng Raw were also jointly recognized by the foundation because they "did not allow their minority origins to stop them from empowering other people."
Filipino healthcare pioneer Ernesto Domingo, the Nepalese anti-human trafficking organization Shakti Samuha (Power Group) and the Indonesian anti-corruption group Komisi Pemberantasan Korupsi (Corruption Eradication Commission) are the other winners of the awards to be handed out on August 31, the foundation said in a statement.
