E-Jeepneys expected to travel SM North-Katipunan Avenue-SM Megamall route by end of 2013
The fare for e-jeepneys will not hurt commuters’ pockets
InterAksyon.com's Likha Cuevas-Miel reports that a total of 30 electronic jeepneys will start plying the SM North-Katipunan Avenue-SM Megamall route by Christmas this year as part of a company's bid to create the "first electric vehicle rapid transit system in the country."
The report explained that the zero-emission e-jeeps, dubbed as City Optimized Managed Environmental Transport (COMET), "will start ferrying passengers to and from the two SM malls by the first week of December." Former congressman Sigfrido Tinga, the executive director of the company launching the e-jeeps, said passengers will be charged the same fare as that of ordinary diesel jeeps.
Based on his company's estimates, Tinga said e-jeepney drivers can collect P4,000-5,000 in fares daily from plying the route while unit owners can earn around P25,000 a month from fares and advertisements on the vehicles.
