Sen. Miriam Santiago recommends ditching pork barrel tradition by 2016
She says senators need time to adjust to the loss of their pork.
ABS-CBN correspondent Ryan Chua reports that Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago has filed a resolution to scrap the pork barrel fund given to senators and congressmen by 2016.
The report explained that under Santiago’s Resolution 133, "senators’ P200 million PDAF (priority development assistance fund) will be reduced to P100 million in 2014, cut further to P50 million in 2015, and scrapped in 2016... For congressmen, the amount will be slashed from P70 million to P35 million in 2014, decreased to P15 million in 2015, and be gone in 2016." Calls to scrap the PDAF have been gaining ground lately due to the controversy implicating a number of lawmakers in a P10 billion scam.
Santiago said she called for the gradual abolition of the pork barrel funds to give lawmakers time to adjust to the eventual loss of their PDAF.
