Congressman pushes for the creation of a law to bring in more naturalized players for Gilas Pilipinas

Rep. Robbie Puno wants more foreign backups on the national team in case a player gets injured.

Nelson Beltran of The Philippine Star reports that Antipolo representative Robbie Puno mentioned the need for the creation of a law allowing the entry of more naturalized players in the Philippine national basketball team during a privilege speech he delivered on Monday, August 12.

The report explained that Puno, the author of the bill bestowing Filipino citizenship on Marcus Douthit, said he "wants to firm up the country's long-term program for the national team with the addition one or two more naturalized players." The lawmaker explained that the players, which will be picked by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas for the national team, would serve as back up to one another in case any one of them gets injured.

Puno cited the case of Douthit, who was forced to sit out Gilas Pilipinas' final game against Iran in the 27th FIBA Asia Championship, as proof that more naturalized players need to be on the national team. Gilas Pilipinas finished with a silver medal in the in the international basketball competition.
